I’m still smashing my head against the desk.
for some reason my son, strapped into his car seat, had the keys. He locked the doors and threw the keys on the ground while my wi fe went to get the mail. they were able to open the door in a non fucked up manner and all is well, except for my blood pressure. i’m think ing she shoul d send them my way so they can pick me up after I have a stroke and drop.
side note: thanks for all the help last night. I’m going to sort through all the comments and think it over some more.

You could keep another key, perhaps the valet key, in the house. But then this will never happen again.

house was locked up so that key would be locked inside the house.

Sounds like good insurance...
I really should get another key, I have no toddlers to lock in the car, but still only having one key seems like a bad idea.

Glad your kid’s okay.
Kinja seems to have ate my comments on your trash can post. I had everything nicely diagrammed out in SketchUp too :(

Whenever we travel, I always make sure that Mrs. Ttyymmnn has a second key in her purse.

Sounds like the wife was the problem here. You can’t blame kids for adult mistakes.

Find a place to hide a key outside. There have been numerous times when either my boys have come home without a key, a key got locked inside the house, etc. Ours is in the padlocked shed in the backyard.

I’d probably prefer a keypad (or even biometric) lock for one door at this point.

This is a good take.
Better take, go buy a ford with the keypad on the door.

This is why if I’m not in my car and the keys are in it, I roll a window down. It is a good habit to be in and will certainly
prevent situations like this. You just have to crack it enough to get your arm in and unlock. I have my dog with me quite often and this has saved me great pains when he steps on the arm rest and locks the doors. Glad he got out ok most importantly.

This causes me anxiety, but glad it was easily solved . I took a short drive this morning before settling down to work - ahem, look at Oppo - and had a brief moment of panic when I walked inside, having just looked at the 17-month-old’s seat in my truck . I thought “don’t leave the baby in the car!”.... then my brain started working again and I remembered he wasn’t with me. Instant pucker.
Also, while I’m sorta lukewarm on the architecture, that looks like some serious garage action across the street.

If you’re talking about the house, be careful of batteries. Had the issue in the past. Pain in the d.

Yeah, I was talking about the house, and obviously., I don’t think you’d want to make it the only way in, but most houses have more than one entrance, and you can get locks that accept a physical key as well (doesn’t help you if you get used to not using a key, but as a backup it can be handy).
Of course it could be on the car as well, I’m honestly shocked that Ford’s silly little keypads weren’t adopted by other manufacturers, they were (are? I think you can still get them on some models?) handy, especially for families with kids.

1. I have never done anything dumb, nope never.
2. Last week my wife lost her car keys in the yard. The yard that accumulates 3 feet of snow every winter...
3. It got warm and melted and she found her keys.
4. This is not the first time this has happened.
5. We don’t lock our house so the spare keys are easy to find and use.
Here is the yard in February.

I can’t recall - do you have a garage door with an opener? If so, get a keypad to mount outside the garage and keep a spare set of keys in the garage.
If you don’t have a garage door opener, you could always go with a wall-mounted key safe. They’re only about $30.

This happened to my son in my father’s truck, we pried the door open JUST
enough to give him a stick (a dowel, I think) so he could hit the unlock button. He was pretty little, but could tell a U from an L so that was good. We were just plowing the driveway with it at the time. So as soon as we went inside he goes “mommy I got locked in the truck!” with a big smile on his face
My dog also did this to me, with my truck backed down a boat ramp, trailer in the water, engine running
. Window was thankfully open JUST enough to get a stick in there and push the button.

So many questions... why was your son in his seat WITH the keys? Why was he left alone with the keys while she got the mail? Why wouldn’t she get the mail before going to the car (which would be the logical thing to do)?
And I say this as a father of two kids and if the mother of my kids did something like that, I would ask WTF was going on her head to cause
this bad comedy of errors to unfold
?
This reminds me of one time when living at home, we had 3 cars all in a row on a single car width driveway.
My sister’s car was the last one in the row of cars. My sister decided to go out with her boyfriend. My sister decided to take her ‘regular’ keys which she had hanging on the hook which also had her house key. She kept her ‘spare’ car key in her purse... which she took with her.
Meaning that by being an idiot, she blocked us all in.
And I had to get to work.
I was pissed.
I ended up managing to just barely get my dad’s car out by driving over our front lawn.
And that night when I got home, I yelled at my sister for idiotically keeping her spare car key in her purse and from that point on, the spare car key is going on the hook and she can keep her regular keys in her purse.
And that’s how it was from that point on.
Also note that my sister had also previously locked her regular car keys in her car... which her purse with the spare key also inside the car.
FAAAAAAAACK.

What you do is keep a valet key in a pouch on your wheelchair so you can never forget it. Also, you keep a house key in a hidden place like tryymmnn said.
Glad everything worked out. Must have been a tad frightening.

But try to breathe and not stress too bad. The holidays are almost here so you can have lots of booze without being judged too hard!
